The Kenai Peninsula
Having heard so much about the Kenai, Alaska’s playground, we were looking forward to this part of the trip. We started out in Seward, where The Aluminum Whale managed to help procure prime campsites. After sampling their excellent food and beverage scene, we hiked to Exit Glacier, part of Kenai Fiords NP.
Seward, was just a really nice place to hang out and explore. We had plenty of wildlife, epic views at our doorstep, and great food within walking distance. We ended up spending nearly two weeks here!
From Seward, we made our way to Homer with a brief stop along the way to see the Silver Salmon running on the Russian River. We hoped to see some bears too but settled for the salmon. In Homer, we end up next to Less Junk More Journey‘s caravan with Fummins Family Roadtrip and Finding Our Someday. We had actually been at the same camp as Fummins in Seward but didn’t know them yet. Homer, larger than Seward, was just as entertaining and enjoyable.
With about ten days to go before our recently made reservations in Denali NP, we make our way back up towards Whittier via an overnight stop on Soldotna for provisions. Whittier is quite an interesting little town only accessible by boat or tunnel that is shared with the passenger and freight trains.
On the inland side of the Whittier tunnel is Portage lake and glacier, which we visited and toured by boat.
From Whittier we visited the tiny town of Hope and were able to catch a good bore tide on the Turnagain Arm and explore a bit of this side of the peninsula.
There was so much on the Kenai that we weren’t able to do but we had a date with a mountain.
